¤ LAN technology has enabled many offices to streamline their operations by sharing information, using a shared database for several instances of the same program, or share an internet connection between the various computers in an office. Perhaps even more important is LAN technology that is Server-centric: this means that a Server (larger, more power computer) stores all the information, and the PC's or terminals connect to it to get the data they need to function. This allows for a backup to be performed which collects all the information onto some type of medium like a magnetic tape or other device so it can be stored offsite in case of hardware breakdowns and failures, or anything that might cause a company to lose it's data.
¤ Many offices still don't have Server-centric LAN technology in place. A number of small offices today have peer-to-peer networks where all the computers are connected together and can share information, but they don't often have a centralized server to store all the information in one place, nor do they often have a way to back up all the PC's in the office. If proper backups are not in place when a PC fails in this instance, typically all the data is lost. In a Server-centric environment with a backup, all the data is on the server so that when the PC fails, nothing except a few personalized settings are lost. This makes data recovery much more cost effective and means much less frustration for the user of that PC.
